Ayman Al-Zawahiri was born on June 19, 1951, in Cairo, Egypt, into a prominent family. His father was a professor of pharmacology, and his grandfather was the grand imam of Al-Azhar University. Al-Zawahiri was a trained surgeon and was deeply influenced by radical Islamist ideologies during his youth.
