Angela Merkel was born on July 17, 1954, in Hamburg, West Germany. She earned a doctorate in physics from the University of Leipzig and worked as a research scientist before entering politics following the fall of the Berlin Wall. Merkel joined the newly formed Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and quickly rose through the ranks, holding various ministerial positions before becoming the leader of the CDU in 2000.
