ExxonMobil is an American multinational oil and gas corporation with an estimated market capitalization of around $644 billion. One of the world’s largest publicly traded energy companies, it is involved in the exploration, production, refining, and marketing of oil, natural gas, and petrochemical products around the globe.

Company Origins

ExxonMobil traces its roots back to John D. Rockefeller’s Standard Oil Company, founded in 1870. After Standard Oil was broken up by U.S. antitrust regulators in 1911, two of the resulting companies, Exxon (formerly Standard Oil of New Jersey) and Mobil (formerly Standard Oil of New York), operated separately for most of the 20th century before merging in 1999 to form ExxonMobil, one of the largest corporate mergers in history at the time.

Rise to Prominence

Following the 1999 merger, ExxonMobil rapidly established itself as the largest publicly traded oil and gas company in the world, leveraging combined exploration, refining, and distribution networks spanning multiple continents. Its scale and integrated operations, from upstream drilling to downstream retail, made it a bellwether for the global energy industry.

Business History

ExxonMobil operates across upstream (exploration and production), downstream (refining and marketing), and chemical segments, with operations in dozens of countries. The company has made major investments in liquefied natural gas, deepwater drilling (including significant offshore discoveries in Guyana), and, more recently, low-carbon initiatives such as carbon capture and hydrogen. In 2023, ExxonMobil acquired Pioneer Natural Resources in a major deal that expanded its footprint in the Permian Basin, one of the largest U.S. shale plays.

How It Built Its Wealth

ExxonMobil’s revenue is generated primarily through the sale of crude oil, natural gas, and refined petroleum products, along with petrochemicals used in manufacturing. Its integrated business model, owning assets across the entire value chain from extraction to retail fuel stations, has historically provided resilience against volatile commodity prices. The company also returns substantial capital to shareholders through dividends and share buybacks, and continues to invest in production growth and select lower-carbon energy ventures.

Overall, ExxonMobil’s market capitalization stands at an estimated $644 billion, reflecting its position as one of the world’s largest and most influential energy companies.
