Sony SAB is an Indian Hindi-language general entertainment television channel owned by Sony Pictures Networks India, known for long-running comedy and family dramas including Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah.

Launch & Origins

Sony SAB was launched on April 23, 1999, as SAB TV, a Hindi-language comedy channel founded by Gautam Adhikari and Markand Adhikari under Sri Adhikari Brothers Television Network.

Rise to Prominence

Sony Pictures Networks acquired the channel in March 2005 and repositioned it as a broader general entertainment destination rather than a pure comedy channel. The network’s official rebrand to Sony SAB took effect in September 2011, and the channel began HD broadcasts on September 5, 2016.

Programming & Channel History

Sony SAB built its identity on long-running comedy programming, starting with Yes Boss as one of its earliest enduring hits. Its flagship show, Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, has run for well over a decade and become one of the longest-running sitcoms in Indian television history. Current-era programming has expanded to include dramas such as Pushpa Impossible alongside its established comedy slate. The channel broadcasts in 1080i HD and is distributed across major Indian DTH and cable platforms, as well as streaming via SonyLIV and internationally through services like Sling TV.

Business Model & Revenue

As part of Sony Pictures Networks India, Sony SAB generates revenue through advertising sales, cable and DTH carriage and subscription fees, and digital syndication of its content library via SonyLIV and other platforms. Because it operates within a larger conglomerate rather than as a standalone public company, Sony SAB’s individual financial results are not separately disclosed.

Ownership & Structure

Sony SAB is wholly owned and operated by Sony Pictures Networks India, itself part of the global Sony Group’s media operations. It forms one part of Sony’s broader portfolio of Indian entertainment, sports and kids’ channels.

As a flagship channel within Sony Pictures Networks India rather than a standalone company, Sony SAB does not have a separately reported net worth or valuation figure.
