Powell attended J.H. Rose High School in Greenville, where he excelled as a football player. He went on to play college football at Clemson University, where he showed great potential as a wide receiver. Powell had a breakout season in 2020, during which he caught 53 passes for 882 yards and seven touchdowns. His impressive performance earned him a spot on the All-ACC Second Team.
