Romero was born on April 27, 1998, in Cordoba, Argentina. He began his football career at the youth academy of his local club, Belgrano, where he quickly rose through the ranks and made his professional debut in 2017. After impressive performances with Belgrano, Romero caught the eye of Italian club Genoa, who signed him in 2018.
