Tavai played college football at the University of Hawaii, where he was a standout linebacker for the Rainbow Warriors. During his time at Hawaii, Tavai emerged as one of the top defensive players in the Mountain West Conference, earning All-Mountain West First Team honors in 2017 and 2018.
