Nelson played college football for the Iowa Hawkeyes at the University of Iowa. He started his career as a defensive end but transitioned to an offensive tackle during his time with the Hawkeyes. In 2019, he signed with the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent and spent the majority of the season on their practice squad. In 2020, he was promoted to the Lions’ active roster and played in six games for the team.
