Freeman made his professional debut for Gillingham in 2008 and quickly caught the eye of scouts from top clubs in England. In 2012, he joined Stevenage FC, where he enjoyed a successful spell, making 125 appearances and scoring 16 goals. His impressive performances caught the attention of Bristol City, who signed him in 2014 for a reported fee of £400,000.
