Devaney was born on November 15, 1980, in Birmingham, United Kingdom. He is of English nationality and began his football career at his hometown club, Coventry City, in 1999. Devaney then went on to play for Cheltenham Town, Watford, Barnsley, and Walsall, among other clubs.
