Thunberg was born in Stockholm, Sweden, to actor Svante Thunberg and opera singer Malena Ernman, who represented Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2009. Thunberg has spoken openly about being diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and selective mutism, describing her neurodivergence as part of what drives her intense, highly focused approach to climate activism rather than a barrier to it. She became deeply concerned about climate change after learning about it in school at around age eight, and by her early teens had adopted a vegan diet and stopped flying, decisions that later became central to her public activism.

In August 2018, at age 15, Thunberg began skipping school to sit alone outside the Swedish parliament holding a sign reading “Skolstrejk for klimatet” (School strike for climate), demanding stronger action on climate change. Her solitary protest quickly attracted media attention and inspired students around the world to organize their own school strikes, growing into the global Fridays for Future movement. Her direct, uncompromising speaking style, including her widely viewed “How dare you” speech at the 2019 UN Climate Action Summit, made her one of the most recognizable activists of her generation and led to her being named TIME’s Person of the Year in 2019, the youngest individual to receive that recognition.

Since 2019, Thunberg has continued to lead climate protests across Europe, address the World Economic Forum in Davos on multiple occasions, and testify before the United States Congress. She famously crossed the Atlantic Ocean by zero-emissions sailing yacht in 2019 to attend the UN summit in New York rather than fly, underscoring her commitment to reducing her personal carbon footprint. In more recent years, she has broadened her activism to include other causes alongside climate change, including participation in pro-Palestinian demonstrations and involvement with flotilla missions aimed at breaking the blockade of Gaza, actions that have drawn both support and controversy.

Thunberg’s annual income is drawn primarily from book royalties and occasional prize money, rather than a salary or business profits. She has repeatedly stated in interviews that she does not seek to profit personally from her activism and has donated significant portions of award money to her own foundation rather than retaining it.
