Streep was born in Summit, New Jersey, to Mary Wolf Wilkinson, a commercial artist, and Harry William Streep Jr., a pharmaceutical executive. She studied drama at Vassar College before earning a Master of Fine Arts from the Yale School of Drama in 1975, where she trained alongside future collaborators in a rigorous classical theater program.
