How did Akshay Kumar build his fortune?
From a modest start to decades at the top of Indian cinema, the answer unfolds one chapter at a time.
Before the fame
His path to stardom began far from the film sets that would eventually make him a household name.
Kumar made his acting debut in Saugandh (1991), but it was the action film Khiladi (1992) that gave him his breakthrough and the enduring nickname “Khiladi Kumar.” A string of Khiladi-branded action films through the 1990s built his identity as one of Hindi cinema’s most bankable stunt-driven leading men, doing many of his own stunts thanks to his martial arts background. That reputation for reliability at the box office became the foundation for one of the most durable careers in Indian cinema.

The breakthrough years
A relentless release schedule and a talent for reinvention turned early success into remarkable staying power.
Over the following decades, Kumar proved unusually versatile, moving from straight action into comedy (the Hera Pheri and Housefull franchises) and then, from the mid-2010s onward, into a distinctive run of patriotic and social-issue dramas: Baby (2015), Airlift (2016), Rustom (2016), Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017), PadMan (2018), Kesari (2019), Mission Mangal (2019), Good Newwz (2019), and Sooryavanshi (2021) among them. He won the National Film Award for Best Actor in 2017 for Rustom, and was honoured with the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, in 2009. He has remained prolific into the mid-2020s, with releases including Sky Force (2025) continuing to perform at the box office, and further films including Welcome to the Jungle in the pipeline.
What a leading role can earn
Film fees, profit participation and a high volume of projects all contribute to the bigger picture.
Kumar has appeared on Forbes India’s Celebrity 100 list for most of the past fifteen years, frequently ranking among the top handful of earners nationally, though 2025 trade press placed him further down the list (around 10th) as newer stars’ endorsement and streaming income grew. Indian financial media have estimated his annual earnings, combining film fees, profit shares, and endorsements, at anywhere from roughly INR 200 crore to INR 486 crore depending on the year and how many films he released — a wide range that reflects how unevenly Bollywood income is disclosed rather than any single confirmed figure.
The business beyond the box office
Brand partnerships and business interests extend the earning story well beyond acting fees.
Brand endorsements have long been one of Kumar’s largest income streams; Indian business press has repeatedly cited him as fronting 20 or more brands simultaneously across categories including automobiles, consumer durables, and household products. His endorsement history has not been without controversy: in 2022 he briefly appeared in advertising for the pan masala brand Vimal Elaichi, which drew significant public backlash given his own earlier public statements against celebrities endorsing tobacco-adjacent products. He apologised, withdrew from the campaign, and said he would donate the entire fee to charity — an episode Indian media has cited as reflecting how closely tied his brand value is to a clean, family-friendly public image.
Notable luxury item
A documented Mumbai property transaction offers a rare public glimpse of the assets associated with that success.
Kumar’s primary residence is a duplex apartment in Juhu, Mumbai, which Indian real-estate and entertainment press have valued at roughly INR 80 crore. He also owns property in Canada dating to the years his family spent there. His car collection has been widely photographed and reportedly includes a Rolls-Royce Ghost, a Range Rover, a BMW 7 Series, and a Mercedes-Maybach, with the total collection estimated by Indian media at upward of INR 20 crore. Despite his wealth, Kumar is frequently described in Indian media as living relatively modestly for his earnings bracket, favouring a disciplined daily routine — he is well known for waking before dawn — over overt displays of luxury.

Within Bollywood’s small tier of A-list earners, Kumar is most often compared to Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. Shah Rukh Khan’s fortune is generally estimated far higher than either — Indian rich-list trackers put him in billionaire territory, driven substantially by his stake in Red Chillies Entertainment and ownership of the Kolkata Knight Riders IPL franchise — while Salman Khan’s net worth is usually estimated somewhat above Kumar’s, aided by his own production banner and a long-running endorsement and event-hosting business. Kumar has instead been distinguished by sheer output, regularly releasing more films per year than most of his A-list peers, which has kept his combined film-and-endorsement income competitive even without a media conglomerate or sports franchise behind it.
