Mahomes was born in Tyler, Texas, the son of Pat Mahomes Sr., a former Major League Baseball pitcher, which exposed him to professional sports and locker-room culture from a young age. He grew up playing multiple sports, including baseball and basketball, before focusing on football at Whitehouse High School and then Texas Tech University, where he set numerous NCAA passing records as a dual-threat quarterback known for his improvisational playmaking. Mahomes married Brittany Matthews, his high school girlfriend and a former professional soccer player, in 2022; the couple have three children together, and Brittany has become a prominent businesswoman in her own right as co-owner of the Kansas City Current in the National Women’s Soccer League.

Mahomes was selected 10th overall in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs, who traded up to acquire him. He signed a major apparel and footwear deal with Adidas in 2022 after previously being with a different brand, reported by sports-business media to be worth tens of millions of dollars over its term. He is also the face of a long-running, widely recognized State Farm insurance advertising campaign, in which he frequently appears alongside NFL rival Aaron Rodgers, along with additional partnerships with brands including Oakley, Head & Shoulders, Bose, and Hy-Vee. His combined endorsement income is regularly cited by Forbes as among the highest of any active NFL player.

Mahomes holds ownership stakes in multiple professional sports franchises, including a minority stake in Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals and, together with his wife Brittany, an ownership position in the NWSL’s Kansas City Current. He has also moved into the restaurant business, co-founding the steakhouse “1587 Prime” in Kansas City with Chiefs teammate Travis Kelce, and has been involved in various smaller startup investments.
