Sönmez began his football career at a young age, playing for various youth teams in Turkey before moving on to play for Galatasaray’s youth academy. He made his professional debut for Galatasaray in 2012, where he played for two seasons before moving to Fenerbahçe in 2014. Sönmez then had stints with several other Turkish clubs before making the move to Cardiff City in 2021.
