Early Life & Family

Fernando Alonso Diaz was born on July 29, 1981, in Oviedo, the capital of the Asturias region in northern Spain, to a modest family. His father, Jose Luis Alonso, was an amateur kart racer and a mechanic at an explosives factory in a mine shaft, while his mother, Ana Diaz, worked in a department store. He has an older sister, Lorena. His father built a pedal-powered kart originally meant for Lorena; when she showed no interest, three-year-old Fernando took it up instead, sparking his racing career. He attended local schools in Oviedo but dropped out in 2000 to focus fully on racing.

Rise to Fame

Alonso won his first karting championship at age seven and went on to win consecutive Spanish junior karting titles from 1993 to 1996, as well as the Junior World Cup in 1996. He progressed rapidly through single-seater categories and made his Formula 1 debut in 2001 with the Minardi team. His breakthrough came after moving to Renault, where in 2005 he became the youngest World Champion in F1 history at the time, a title he defended successfully in 2006.

Career History

After his championship years at Renault, Alonso raced for McLaren, returned briefly to Renault, then spent five seasons at Ferrari (2010-2014) where he finished runner-up in the championship three times. He later returned to McLaren, and also competed outside F1, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans twice (2018, 2019) and the World Endurance Championship title, completing a rare “triple crown” bid by also racing the Indianapolis 500. He returned to F1 with Alpine in 2021 and joined Aston Martin in 2023, where he continues to compete.

How They Built Their Wealth

The bulk of Alonso’s fortune comes from his Formula 1 driver salaries, which have consistently ranked among the highest on the grid across two decades, including multi-million dollar contracts at Ferrari, McLaren and now Aston Martin. He has also earned significant income from sponsorships and endorsement deals with brands connected to motorsport, as well as prize money from his Le Mans and endurance racing campaigns. Alonso has additionally built wealth through personal investments and business ventures outside racing.

Personal Life

Alonso was married to Spanish singer Raquel del Rosario from 2006 to 2011. As of recent reports, he has been in a relationship with Spanish television presenter Melissa Jimenez since 2023. Alonso remains deeply connected to his home region of Asturias, where the Fernando Alonso Museum and Circuit in Llanera showcases cars and memorabilia from his career.

Known Assets

Alonso owns the Fernando Alonso Collection, a museum in Llanera, Asturias housing more than 400 items from his career, including every kart and race car he has driven, along with helmets, suits and trophies.

With an estimated net worth of $260 million, Fernando Alonso remains one of the wealthiest and most accomplished drivers in Formula 1 history.
