Ayrton Senna da Silva was born on March 21, 1960, in São Paulo, Brazil, to Milton da Silva, a wealthy landowner and factory owner, and Neide Senna da Silva. Senna’s fascination with racing began at age four, when his father gave him a small go-kart, and by 13 he was racing competitively and winning.

Rise to Fame

Senna progressed through British Formula Ford and Formula Three in the early 1980s, winning championships in both before making his Formula One debut in 1984 with Toleman. His skill in wet-weather conditions and raw speed quickly marked him as a future champion, and he moved to Lotus and then McLaren, where his rivalry with teammate Alain Prost became one of the defining storylines of the sport.

Senna won three Formula One World Championships, in 1988, 1990, and 1991, and took 41 Grand Prix victories over his career, driving for Toleman, Lotus, McLaren, and finally Williams. He moved to Williams for the 1994 season on a contract reported to be worth $20 million annually. He was killed on May 1, 1994, when his car left the track and crashed during the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola. Brazil declared three days of national mourning, and hundreds of thousands of people attended his funeral in São Paulo.
