Hemsworth was born in Melbourne and spent part of his childhood in the Northern Territory, where his father worked as a social worker with Aboriginal communities, before the family settled back in Melbourne. He is the middle of three brothers, alongside older brother Luke and younger brother Liam, both of whom also became actors, making the Hemsworths one of the most prominent acting families to emerge from Australia in recent decades. He attended Heathmont College before pursuing acting, initially without a clear plan for how to break into the industry professionally.

Hemsworth began his career on Australian television, most notably playing Kim Hyde on the long-running soap opera Home and Away from 2004 to 2007. After a brief early Hollywood role as George Kirk in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek (2009), he was cast as the Norse god Thor in Marvel’s Thor (2011), directed by Kenneth Branagh — a role that launched him into global stardom and anchored more than a decade of Marvel Cinematic Universe films.

Outside the MCU, he starred in Rush (2013), In the Heart of the Sea, Ghostbusters (2016), Men in Black: International, and the Netflix action franchise Extraction (2020, 2023). In 2024, he took on the villain role of Dementus in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and continued to balance blockbuster franchise work with smaller, character-driven projects across film and television. He has also fronted the Disney+/National Geographic documentary series Limitless (2022), exploring longevity and health, a project that marked a deliberate shift toward more personal, non-fiction storytelling later in his career.

Hemsworth has consistently ranked among the world’s highest-paid actors in industry surveys, driven primarily by his Marvel salary progression, his Extraction deal with Netflix, and brand endorsement income. His total annual earnings, combining film salaries and endorsements, have been reported in the tens of millions of dollars in his peak years, with Forbes and similar outlets regularly placing him among the top-earning actors globally throughout the 2010s and into the 2020s.

Hemsworth’s per-film Marvel salary reportedly grew from a modest starting figure for the original Thor into a fee in the $20-30 million range for later installments, once backend participation is included. His Extraction deal with Netflix has also been reported as one of the streamer’s richest action-franchise arrangements, reflecting his box office and streaming drawing power.

Hemsworth has held major endorsement partnerships with TAG Heuer watches, Hugo Boss (as a longtime fragrance and fashion ambassador), and Range Rover, among other global brands. These deals, combined with his Marvel-driven visibility, have made him one of the most commercially valuable actors of his generation.

In 2019, Hemsworth co-founded Centr, a fitness, nutrition, and wellness subscription app built around his own training regimens and those of his personal trainer, Luke Zocchi, and other experts. Hemsworth and his wife built an extensive clifftop compound in Byron Bay, New South Wales, reported by Australian outlets to be worth well over AU$20 million, which has become his primary residence and a well-known local landmark.
