Cavill was born on the island of Jersey in the Channel Islands, one of five sons of a stockbroker father and a mother who worked in banking. He attended Stowe School, a boarding school in Buckinghamshire, England, where he became involved in drama and rugby before pursuing acting professionally. He has spoken publicly about facing bullying over his weight as a teenager, an experience he has credited with shaping the discipline he later brought to both his acting career and his widely documented fitness regimen.

Cavill’s early career included a role in The Count of Monte Cristo (2002) and a lead part as Charles Brandon in the Showtime series The Tudors (2007-2010).
