McConaughey was born in Uvalde, Texas, and raised largely in Longview, Texas, the youngest of three sons of James Donald McConaughey, who ran an oil pipe supply business and had briefly played professional football, and Mary Kathleen McConaughey, a teacher. He attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he studied film, graduating in 1993 — a school he later returned to as a professor, teaching a course on the film industry and holding the informal title ‘Minister of Culture.’

McConaughey’s breakout came with a small but memorable role in Dazed and Confused (1993), followed by a lead role opposite Sandra Bullock and Samuel L. Jackson in A Time to Kill (1996), which established him as a leading man. He is also a minority owner of Austin FC, the Major League Soccer club, holding the official title of Minister of Culture, and has generated additional income from his 2020 bestselling memoir Greenlights, which topped multiple bestseller lists.

McConaughey has long been based in Austin, Texas, rather than Los Angeles, and owns residential property in the area reported to be worth in the tens of millions of dollars. His decision to root his personal and business life in Texas, including his university teaching post and Austin FC ownership stake, has become a defining part of his public identity.
