Cruise was born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV in Syracuse, New York, the third child and only son of Mary Lee (Pfeiffer) and electrical engineer Thomas Cruise Mapother III. His father’s work moved the family frequently through the US and Canada, and Cruise reportedly attended around 15 schools by the time he was 14. His parents divorced when he was 11, and he was raised afterward largely by his mother and three sisters. Cruise has spoken publicly about struggling with dyslexia as a child. He briefly considered the priesthood as a teenager before a high school production of Guys and Dolls redirected him toward acting, and he moved to New York City after graduating in 1980 to pursue it professionally.

Cruise landed his first film role in 1981’s Endless Love, followed by breakout parts in Taps (1981) and The Outsiders (1983). His star-making turn came with Risky Business (1983), which introduced the sunglasses-and-socks dance scene that remains one of the most referenced images in American film comedy. Three years later, Top Gun (1986) turned Cruise into a global A-lister, grossing roughly $357 million worldwide and cementing him as the defining leading man of his generation. He built on that momentum with Cocktail (1988), Rain Man (1988), and Born on the Fourth of July (1989), the last of which earned him his first Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe win.

Cruise went on to earn two further Oscar nominations, for Jerry Maguire (1996) and Magnolia (1999), and built the Mission: Impossible franchise from the ground up starting in 1996, serving as both star and producer across all eight installments through 2025’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. He became known industry-wide for performing dangerous stunts himself, including a fuselage climb on an Airbus A400M, a HALO skydive, and a motorcycle cliff jump. In 2022, Top Gun: Maverick became the highest-grossing film of his career, taking in roughly $1.5 billion worldwide and helping revive theatrical moviegoing after the pandemic. In November 2025, Cruise received an Honorary Academy Award at the Governors Awards, recognizing his career achievements after four competitive nominations without a win.

Cruise’s annual earnings vary enormously depending on release schedule, since his income is driven far more by per-film paydays than by a steady salary. He has repeatedly appeared among the world’s highest-paid actors in years when a Mission: Impossible or Top Gun film reaches theatres, and was still on the list for 2025 (Forbes). The most useful single figure is cumulative rather than annual: by mid-2022 his career earnings had passed one billion dollars (Forbes) – but that is gross income over four decades, before tax, representation and everything he has spent, and is not a net-worth figure.

Cruise is famous in Hollywood for trading a modest upfront quote for a large slice of first-dollar gross box office — a structure only a handful of stars have ever commanded. For Top Gun: Maverick he took an upfront salary reported at around 12 to 14 million dollars against roughly ten per cent of first-dollar gross (Variety, Forbes). The film grossed 1.49 billion (Variety) and Deadline later worked its net profit through at 391 million, one of the few times a release of that size has had its profit position calculated publicly. A payday above 100 million from that single title has been widely reported, though the participation terms themselves have never been published. He has used the same structure across Mission: Impossible: Fallout carried a series-high budget after his on-set ankle injury (The Hollywood Reporter) and took 787.5 million worldwide (Variety). Figures circulating for what any individual entry paid him are estimates, not disclosures.

Unlike most A-list stars, Cruise has largely avoided traditional celebrity endorsement campaigns for consumer brands, a choice frequently noted by entertainment press as part of his brand strategy. His most valuable “endorsement effect” has instead come from product association inside his own films — his Ray-Ban Wayfarers in Risky Business and Aviators in Top Gun each drove well-documented spikes in sales for the brand, and the Mission: Impossible series has featured long-running product-placement partnerships with brands including BMW, Rolex, and Apple. Figures circulate for mid-2000s licensing deals in international markets – a TAG Heuer partnership put at around 100 million dollars, along with Pepsi and Omega arrangements – but they trace only to net-worth aggregators and secondary write-ups rather than to any announcement by the brands or by Cruise. Cruise co-founded Cruise/Wagner Productions with longtime producing partner Paula Wagner in 1992, a company that produced every one of his films from Mission: Impossible (1996) through Valkyrie (2008) under an exclusive Paramount deal, grossing more than $2.9 billion at the box office before the partnership ended in 2008. He has continued producing his own projects since, including the entire Mission: Impossible and Top Gun franchises, giving him a financial stake in these films well beyond a standard acting fee. In January 2024 he signed a strategic partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery to develop, produce and star in films there. It is worth being precise about what that deal is, because it is often described wrongly: both Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter report it is not exclusive and not a first-look arrangement, and he has continued to work with Paramount and Universal alongside it. Forbes put his cumulative value to Paramount across two franchises at roughly eight to eight and a half billion dollars in box office.

Cruise has owned an extensive real estate portfolio over the years. He developed a 320-acre ranch compound outside Telluride, Colorado, in the 1990s, complete with a 10,000-square-foot main lodge, a separate guesthouse, a helipad, and private trails; he first listed it at 59 million dollars in 2014 (Forbes), relisted it at 39.5 million in 2021 and sold it for that asking price (Forbes, Robb Report). In Beverly Hills, he leased a three-acre Tudor-style estate for roughly $55,000 a month in the early 2000s before purchasing a seven-bedroom, nine-bathroom Beverly Hills estate with Katie Holmes for a reported $30.5 million in 2007. He is also known for maintaining a private jet and a substantial car and motorcycle collection tied to his personal interest in aviation and motorsport.
