Samuel Frederick Smith was born on May 19, 1992, in London and grew up in Great Chishill, Cambridgeshire. Their father worked in finance and their mother was a broker; Smith is a third cousin of singer Lily Allen. They attended school in Bishop’s Stortford, sang in local choirs, and studied singing privately under jazz pianist Joanna Eden. By their late teens they were self-releasing songs and performing on the London club circuit while working day jobs ahead of a record deal.

Smith’s breakthrough came as the featured vocalist on Disclosure’s 2012 garage single “Latch,” which reached number 11 on the UK Singles Chart. A featured spot on Naughty Boy’s “La La La” followed in 2013 and topped the UK chart, building momentum ahead of a solo deal with Capitol Records. Smith’s debut album, In the Lonely Hour, arrived in May 2014 and became one of the best-selling debut albums of the decade in the UK, driven by the global hit “Stay With Me.” It entered at number one in the UK and number two on the US Billboard 200, and within a year Smith had gone from featured vocalist to one of pop’s most recognizable new voices.

At the 2015 Grammy Awards, Smith won four awards for In the Lonely Hour, including Best New Artist and, for “Stay With Me,” Song and Record of the Year. Months later, “Writing’s on the Wall,” the theme for Spectre, won the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Original Song and became the first Bond theme to reach UK number one. The Thrill of It All (2017) and Love Goes (2020) each topped the UK and US charts, spinning off hits including “Too Good at Goodbyes.” In 2022, “Unholy,” with Kim Petras, gave Smith their first Hot 100 number one and made Petras the first openly transgender artist to top that chart; the song has since passed one billion Spotify streams. A fourth album, Gloria, followed in 2023 with a 78-date tour, and a fifth, Hazel Eyes, arrives in August 2026.

Sam Smith’s income, like that of most touring artists, varies enormously between years built around a major album and tour and quieter years spent writing and recording. Tour years, such as 2018-2019 and 2023, appear to have produced Smith’s highest earnings, per Billboard’s Boxscore reporting on touring grosses, while non-touring years rely more on streaming royalties, songwriting income, and licensing. No regulatory filing discloses Smith’s personal annual income, so any year-by-year figure is an estimate drawn from touring-industry reporting rather than confirmed accounting.

Smith has recorded for Capitol Records, part of Universal Music Group, since signing ahead of their 2014 debut, and remains with the label for Hazel Eyes. Their songwriting was represented by Sony Music Publishing before Smith signed a new global publishing deal in November 2021 with Warner Chappell Music and boutique publisher Tim & Danny Music — an exclusive worldwide joint venture Music Week reported covers all of Smith’s future work. Music Business Worldwide put Smith’s catalogue at over 30 billion streams and 30 million adjusted album sales at that point, a total that has grown since. Touring is the most significant documented income stream: Billboard reported The Thrill of It All Tour had grossed $86.1 million from 94 shows by December 2018, part of career touring receipts of $102.7 million from 1.4 million tickets at that point, with the tour ultimately running to 106 shows. The 2023 Gloria tour, spanning 78 shows across four continents, added substantially to that total, though a final audited gross was not published. “Stay With Me” has also been certified Diamond by the RIAA, denoting 10 million equivalent units sold, streamed, or downloaded in the US alone.

Smith’s highest-profile fashion partnership came in 2015, when Balenciaga named them the face of its autumn/winter menswear campaign, shot by photographer Josh Olins under creative director Alexander Wang — Smith’s first major fashion campaign, as WWD reported at the time. Beyond that, Smith is a regular presence at fashion week shows for houses including Dior, but reporting on further paid ambassador deals of comparable scale is limited; most other brand appearances in entertainment press describe Smith attending as a guest rather than a paid campaign face.

Outside music, Smith’s documented commercial activity is modest compared with some pop peers. They sell tour merchandise and apparel through an official online store, standard for an artist of their stature. Independent reporting does not document a record label, restaurant, technology investment, or other outside company founded or majority-owned by Smith; a “record label” claim that circulates on some low-quality summary sites is not substantiated by primary reporting, so it is not repeated here.

UK entertainment media reported in 2019 that Smith had bought a roughly £12 million (about $15 million) five-bedroom, Grade II listed mansion in Hampstead, north London, an area also home to actor Jude Law. That report was attributed to an unnamed source rather than a confirmed sale price or land registry record, so it should be treated as reported, not independently confirmed; it is not known whether the property remains Smith’s primary residence. No other specific high-value asset has been reliably documented in mainstream reporting.
