Usyk was born in Simferopol, Crimea, and began boxing at age nine. He built an outstanding amateur career, culminating in a gold medal in the super heavyweight division at the 2012 London Olympics. He married his wife, Katerina, and the couple’s family life was upended after Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Usyk has spoken about how his early years training in Crimea shaped his famously unorthodox, high-volume southpaw style, and he has remained close to his coaching team from that era throughout his rise to professional stardom.

Usyk turned professional in 2013 and rose quickly through the cruiserweight division. In 2018, he became the first boxer in the four-belt era to unify all major titles at cruiserweight, defeating Murat Gassiev in the final of the World Boxing Super Series — a result that made him one of the sport’s most respected technicians and set up his move to heavyweight.

The Gassiev win completed a full sweep of the cruiserweight division inside a single tournament format, a feat widely regarded as one of the most impressive single-year achievements in modern boxing and one that immediately made him a target for the sport’s biggest heavyweight names.

Usyk moved up to heavyweight and defeated Anthony Joshua twice, in 2021 and 2022, to win and then defend world titles. He became the undisputed heavyweight champion in May 2024 with a split-decision win over Tyson Fury in Riyadh, then avenged any doubt with a clear unanimous-decision win in their December 2024 rematch. He has remained active into 2026, including a title defense against Daniel Dubois and a scheduled crossover bout against kickboxing star Rico Verhoeven in Egypt.

Becoming undisputed heavyweight champion made Usyk only the second boxer in the four-belt era to hold that status at heavyweight, and the first boxer in history to become undisputed champion in two different weight classes during the four-belt era, a distinction that places him among the most decorated fighters of his generation.

Usyk’s earnings rose sharply once his fights began being staged as part of Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh Season boxing events. His two fights against Tyson Fury are together reported to have paid him close to $100 million, placing him among the top-earning boxers in the world in recent years according to Forbes and Ring Magazine rankings.

Unlike some rivals who sign one long-term exclusive broadcast deal, Usyk has fought under a mix of promotional banners, with purses escalating dramatically for his biggest heavyweight unification and rematch fights. His Fury rematch is considered one of the richest heavyweight fights of the modern era.

His 2026 defense against Daniel Dubois and the scheduled Rico Verhoeven crossover event are both expected to add substantially to his career purse total, continuing a run in which nearly every fight since 2021 has outpaced the one before it in reported earnings.

Usyk carries fewer mainstream Western endorsement deals than some of his peers, but holds a strong commercial profile in Ukraine and Europe, where his status as a wartime national symbol has made him a sought-after ambassador for brands and charitable campaigns alike.

Usyk has invested in real estate and various business interests, but is most publicly known for directing large portions of his fight earnings toward Ukraine’s defense and humanitarian relief since Russia’s 2022 invasion, reportedly donating millions of dollars personally to support the military and civilians.

That philanthropic profile has become as central to his public image as his boxing record, with Usyk widely regarded as one of the most prominent global ambassadors for Ukraine’s cause throughout the war.

Usyk owns property in Ukraine, and reportedly abroad given the extended training camps his career requires. He is widely described as living relatively modestly for a fighter of his wealth, a reflection of his devout Orthodox Christian faith and stated preference for a simple lifestyle.
