How did Hunter Schafer build this fortune?
The answer unfolds through the career, earnings, deals and assets behind the headline estimate.
Hunter Schafer before the fame
The background and early turning points that shaped Hunter Schafer’s route to prominence.
Hunter Schafer was born on 31 December 1998 in Raleigh, North Carolina, the eldest of four children of a Presbyterian minister. Nothing in her first eighteen years pointed at a screen career.
What it did point at was drawing. She studied visual art at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and won a place at Central Saint Martins in London. Deferring that place is the hinge of her finances: she set aside art school for a television part, and every figure here follows from it.
Her first income came from fashion. Signed to Elite as a teenager, she walked for Dior, Rick Owens, Miu Miu, Marc Jacobs and Thierry Mugler between 2017 and 2019; The Business of Fashion has tracked her as a fashion figure since. Runway and editorial at that level pay low four figures a show, and we put those three years at $100,000 to $250,000.
Before any of it she was a campaigner. At seventeen she was a named plaintiff in the the American Civil Liberties Union challenge to North Carolina’s House Bill 2. That paid nothing and mattered enormously: it is why casting directors knew her name before she had read a line.
Hunter Schafer’s breakthrough years
The career decisions and defining moments that turned recognition into sustained earning power.
Sam Levinson cast her as Jules Vaughn in HBO’s Euphoria with no professional acting experience. The series ran eight episodes in 2019, two specials across the turn of 2020, eight more in 2022 and eight in 2026, and she co-wrote and co-executive produced the Jules-centred special — a credit that turns a hired performer into part-owner of the material.
Her Euphoria money is our estimate, and it tells the story of her rise. Season one at a newcomer’s HBO rate of $25,000 to $30,000 an episode is $200,000 to $240,000; the specials plus the writing and producing fee add $90,000 to $150,000; season two, by which point she was the show’s second-most discussed performer, at $75,000 to $150,000 an episode is $600,000 to $1.2 million. Season three, which Deadline dated to 12 April 2026 and Variety reviewed as an eight-episode run, is what changed her balance sheet: at a top-billed $350,000 to $500,000 an episode it is worth $2.8 million to $4 million. Euphoria alone is $3.65 million to $5.6 million.
What Hunter Schafer’s work can earn
Reported pay, contracts, royalties and performance income reveal how the fortune was funded.
Film is where the rate was set. She played Tigris Snow in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes in 2023, a supporting part in a prequel that took about $362 million worldwide according to Box Office Mojo. A named role in a franchise instalment at her then standing is a $250,000 to $600,000 job on our estimate, and the picture made her bankable rather than merely famous.
She carried a film outright the following year in Cuckoo, the Alpine horror Variety reviewed out of Berlin, which we put at $200,000 to $450,000. Yorgos Lanthimos’s Kinds of Kindness the same year was an ensemble indie at $60,000 to $150,000. In 2026 she played Hilda in David Lowery’s Mother Mary opposite Anne Hathaway, a casting Deadline first reported and which Box Office Mojo records at a worldwide gross near $3 million; a supporting part at that budget is $150,000 to $400,000. Her four features come to $660,000 to $1.6 million, making screen acting a $4.3 million to $7.2 million gross career so far.
Jules made her one of the most recognisable performers of her generation before she was twenty-five, and of a particular kind: she reads as a fashion figure and a screen actor at once, which is why beauty houses pay for her.
She has been deliberate about what she will not take, telling The Hollywood Reporter that she turns down roles written as trans parts because she wants to be cast as an actor rather than a category. The Hunger Games, Lanthimos and Lowery credits show it has not narrowed her work.
Hunter Schafer’s business beyond the main career
Endorsements, ownership interests and investments can keep compounding long after the initial breakthrough.
This is the second pillar of her income and nearly the size of the first. She has been a global ambassador for Shiseido’s makeup division since 2020, her longest-running deal; a multi-market beauty ambassadorship at her level runs $300,000 to $700,000 a year, so six years is $1.8 million to $4.2 million on our estimate.
Prada has used her as the face of campaign work including the Galleria series, which we put at $200,000 to $500,000 a campaign, and Cosmetics Business reported her appointment as the face of Mugler’s Angel fragrance line, worth $500,000 to $1.2 million a year at that scale. The three together give endorsement income since 2020 of $2.7 million to $6.4 million gross, assuming the Shiseido and Mugler agreements are annual retainers rather than single shoots, which is how houses that size normally contract an ambassador.
Schafer’s income comes from acting fees and beauty retainers, both of them paid to her rather than to a company she owns.
Her one proprietary interest is authorial. The writing and executive-producer credit on the Jules special gives her a participation in that hour rather than a one-off fee. It is small next to the acting fees, but a writing credit keeps paying in library and residual terms long after a season airs.
Hunter Schafer’s notable luxury item
A reported property or major asset offers a tangible glimpse of the wealth behind the public estimate.
Schafer has worked between Los Angeles and New York through the Euphoria years, and we put her property equity, net of mortgage, at $600,000 to $1.5 million. The timing matters more than the number: her largest cheques are from 2026 and are too recent to have become real estate.
The rest is contractual rather than physical — residuals across three Euphoria seasons and four features, the participation on the special she co-wrote, and the unearned balance of the beauty retainers. Nothing points to art or cars large enough to move a figure at this level.
Hunter Schafer’s estimated net worth
Public estimates vary because private contracts, investments, taxes and liabilities are not fully disclosed.
How this estimate is calculated
The documented material here is the work rather than the money: three Euphoria seasons and two specials with episode counts confirmed by Deadline and Variety, the Hunger Games and Mother Mary grosses recorded by Box Office Mojo, and ambassadorships with Shiseido, Prada and Mugler. Every fee below is our own estimate from what comparable work pays at the billing she held.
The arithmetic. Modelling to 2019: $100,000 to $250,000. Euphoria: $200,000 to $240,000, then $90,000 to $150,000, then $600,000 to $1.2 million, then $2.8 million to $4 million — $3.65 million to $5.6 million in all. Features: $250,000 to $600,000, $200,000 to $450,000, $60,000 to $150,000 and $150,000 to $400,000 — $660,000 to $1.6 million. Endorsements since 2020: $2.7 million to $6.4 million. Career gross: $7.1 million to $13.9 million.
Representation and legal take about 20 per cent of a performer’s gross and an effective United States rate near 40 per cent applies to the rest, so a little under half is retained: $3.4 million to $6.7 million. With housing equity and investment growth the working range is $3.5 million to $7.5 million, and we publish its midpoint. The softest input carries two-fifths of the estimate on its own — the season three episode fee. Move it by $100,000 an episode and the gross shifts by $800,000 before tax, which is why one HBO contract would settle this page faster than every other document combined.
Confidence: Indicative — the credits, episode counts and three ambassadorships are confirmed, while every fee attached to them is our own estimate.
Her public work has been advocacy rather than cheque-writing: the House Bill 2 litigation, trans youth charities, and a willingness to speak on the record when most performers at her commercial level would not. For a brand ambassador that is a real risk taken repeatedly, and it has not cost her a contract.
In February 2025 she said her renewed United States passport had been issued with a male sex marker following a change in federal policy, as Variety reported. She addressed it briefly and carried on working. That is what makes her unusual commercially: the houses paying her know exactly who they are buying.
Schafer’s professional record is notably clean: no litigation of her own, no employment dispute and no public falling-out with a collaborator across seven years on a series that has produced plenty of all three for other people.
Such scrutiny as there has been concerns the show rather than her. Euphoria’s explicit content has been argued over since 2019 and she has answered for it in interviews. She has also been the target of sustained online hostility for being trans, which is harassment directed at her rather than conduct by her, and there are no settlements or judgments to net off a valuation.
