Capone’s criminal activities eventually drew the attention of federal authorities. In 1931, he was convicted of tax evasion and sentenced to 11 years in federal prison. His conviction marked the beginning of the end for his criminal empire. Capone served time in several prisons, including the infamous Alcatraz, before being released in 1939 due to deteriorating health. He spent the last years of his life in relative obscurity and died on January 25, 1947, from complications related to syphilis.
