Guterres’s rise to prominence on the international stage came through his work with the United Nations. From 2005 to 2015, he served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), where he was recognized for his efforts in managing refugee crises and advocating for the rights of displaced persons. In 2017, Guterres was appointed as the Secretary-General of the United Nations, a position he currently holds. As Secretary-General, Guterres has focused on issues such as climate change, peace and security, and sustainable development.
