Surratt attended East Lincoln High School in Denver, North Carolina, where he played both quarterback and linebacker for the school’s football team. He was highly recruited as a dual-threat quarterback and initially committed to play college football for the University of North Carolina as a quarterback. However, after suffering an injury that sidelined him for a season, Surratt decided to switch to linebacker.
