After a successful high school career at Chatfield Senior High School in Colorado, Dalton went on to play college football at Virginia Tech. During his time at Virginia Tech, Keene became known for his versatility as a tight end, showcasing his ability to block effectively and make plays in the passing game. His skillset caught the eye of NFL scouts, leading to his selection in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots.
