Schär began his professional career with FC Wil in Switzerland before moving to FC Basel in 2012. He quickly made an impact with Basel, helping the team win multiple league titles and competing in the UEFA Champions League. His strong performances caught the eye of several top European clubs, leading to a transfer to Spanish side Deportivo La Coruña in 2018.
