Cardona attended the United States Naval Academy, where he played college football as a long snapper for the Midshipmen. He was also a member of the Navy Midshipmen football team and was regarded as one of the best long snappers in college football. In 2015, Cardona was selected by the New England Patriots in the fifth round of the NFL Draft, becoming the first long snapper to be drafted by the Patriots since 1994.
