Ward began his football career at the University of Central Michigan, where he played for the Chippewas. During his time at Central Michigan, Ward showcased his talent as a versatile running back with strong receiving skills. In his senior year, he rushed for 1,108 yards and scored 15 touchdowns, earning him All-MAC First Team honors.
