Schoonmaker began his football career at Hamden High School, where he excelled as both a tight end and defensive end. After high school, he attended the University of Michigan, where he played college football for the Wolverines. During his time at Michigan, Schoonmaker showcased his skills as a versatile tight end, known for his blocking ability as well as his prowess as a receiver.
