McLeod attended DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Maryland, where he excelled in football and track and field. He then moved on to the University of Virginia, where he played college football for the Virginia Cavaliers. Despite going undrafted in the 2012 NFL Draft, McLeod signed with the St. Louis Rams as an undrafted free agent.
