Byrd started his football career playing for the Elk Grove High School Thundering Herd in Elk Grove, California. He then went on to play college football for the Fresno State Bulldogs at Fresno State University. During his time at Fresno State, Byrd showcased his skills as a dynamic and disruptive defensive end, earning him a spot on the radar of NFL scouts.
