Sims began his football career in high school, playing for Travis High School in Richmond, Texas. He then went on to play college football at the University of Kansas, where he had an impressive career as a wide receiver and return specialist. In his senior year at Kansas, Sims recorded 34 receptions for 400 yards and four touchdowns, along with two punt return touchdowns.
