Taylor began his football career at Virginia Tech, where he played college football for the Hokies from 2008 to 2011. He was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the sixth round of the 2011 NFL Draft and spent his first four seasons as a backup to Joe Flacco. In 2015, Taylor signed with the Buffalo Bills and took over as the starting quarterback. He had a successful stint with the Bills, leading them to their first playoff appearance in 17 years in 2017.
