Jones made his Formula One debut in 1975 with the Hesketh Racing team before moving on to the Shadow Racing Team in 1976. His breakthrough came in 1977 when he joined the Williams team, where he won his first Grand Prix at the Austrian Grand Prix. In 1980, Jones had a stellar season, winning five races and securing his first and only Formula One World Championship.
