Thompson began his career at Watford FC, where he came through the youth system and made his first-team debut in 2009. He went on to make over 50 appearances for the club before joining Brentford on loan in 2014. After a successful loan spell, Thompson signed for Southend United in 2015, where he became a regular starter and impressed with his performances.
