Smith was born on August 5, 1992, in Mullingar, Ireland. He began his football career at the youth academy of his local team, Mullingar Athletic. He quickly caught the eye of scouts and was signed by Watford FC in 2008. He spent several years at the club, playing for the youth team and eventually making his first-team debut in 2010.
