Ray started his professional career at Crewe Alexandra, where he spent seven years playing for the first team. He made his debut for the club in 2012 and went on to make over 150 appearances for the team. In 2019, he signed for Tranmere Rovers on a two-year deal but was released by the club after one season. Ray then signed for Crewe Alexandra on a short-term deal in 2020 before joining Barrow AFC in 2021.
