McConnell began his career in the youth academy of Manchester United before moving on to play for Wigan Athletic and then Portsmouth. He made his professional debut for Portsmouth in 2012 and quickly became a key player for the team. His strong performances caught the attention of other clubs, and he eventually signed with Cambridge United in 2016.
