Vardy was born in Sheffield, England, and was released by Sheffield Wednesday’s academy as a teenager. He spent his early adult years working in a factory that made medical splints while playing non-league football for Stocksbridge Park Steels, a path far removed from the academy systems that produce most Premier League players.

He has often spoken about how those years on minimal wages, combining factory shifts with evening and weekend matches in England’s lower non-league divisions, shaped both his relentless playing style and his down-to-earth public image once he reached the top of the game.

Vardy worked his way up through non-league football at Halifax Town and Fleetwood Town before Leicester City signed him in 2012 for a then-record fee for a non-league player. He became a Premier League regular and, in 2015, set the competition’s record for scoring in 11 consecutive matches, a feat that made him a household name.

That scoring streak, achieved at age 28 when many players are already well past their breakthrough years, turned Vardy from a relative unknown into one of the most talked-about stories in English football almost overnight.

Vardy was a central figure in Leicester City’s stunning 2015-16 Premier League title win, one of the greatest upsets in sports history given the club’s 5,000-to-1 preseason odds. He spent 13 years at Leicester in total (2012-2025), became the club’s all-time leading Premier League goalscorer, earned senior caps for England including at Euro 2016, and remained a key player through the club’s later relegations and promotions before leaving in 2025 to join Italian side Cremonese.

His longevity at Leicester was itself remarkable for a player who did not break into top-flight football until his late twenties, and he remained the club’s first-choice striker through multiple manager changes and two separate spells outside the Premier League.

At his peak with Leicester, Vardy’s wages reportedly reached around 140,000 pounds per week, or roughly 7.3 million pounds annually. His income has fallen substantially since his 2025 move to Cremonese, reflecting the later stage of his career and the wage structure of Italian football outside the very top clubs.

Vardy signed a reported one-year contract with Cremonese for the 2025-26 season worth around 1.8 million euros, a steep reduction from his Leicester peak. Across his 13 seasons at Leicester City, he is estimated to have earned in the region of 67 million pounds in total wages.

The size of that drop reflects how unusual his career arc has been — most footballers earning Vardy’s Leicester-era wages either move to bigger clubs in their prime or retire near their peak salary, rather than taking a smaller late-career move abroad.

Vardy has held boot and apparel sponsorships throughout his career, along with media and promotional deals tied to his underdog story, including a biographical film released in 2021. He and his wife, media personality Rebekah Vardy, have also featured together in television and reality-adjacent projects that generate additional household income.

The 2021 film, which dramatized his journey from non-league football and a factory job to Premier League champion, brought Vardy a level of mainstream recognition beyond football that few of his playing contemporaries have achieved, further extending his commercial appeal to sponsors.

Vardy has invested in property and various commercial ventures in the East Midlands, where he built his career at Leicester. His household finances are often discussed alongside those of his wife, who has her own significant earnings from television appearances and social media.

Vardy owns a large family home near Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire, along with other property investments accumulated during his long career at Leicester City.
