Stead began his football career at his hometown club, Huddersfield Town, where he made his professional debut in 2002. He quickly caught the attention of major clubs and was signed by Premier League side Blackburn Rovers in 2004. After his spell at Blackburn, Stead went on to play for numerous clubs including Sunderland, Sheffield United, Bristol City, and Notts County.
