Taylor began his professional career at his hometown club, FSV Sarstedt, before moving to England to join Southampton in 1997. He spent three seasons with the Saints before transferring to Fulham in 2000, where he enjoyed a successful seven-year stint at the club. Taylor then signed with Birmingham City in 2003 and went on to make over 200 appearances for the club during his time there.
