Bennett began his footballing career at Derby County, where he came through the youth academy. He made his first-team debut for Derby County in 2011 at the age of 15, becoming the club’s youngest ever first-team player. Bennett had several loan spells during his time at Derby, including brief stints at Bradford City, Chesterfield, and Burton Albion.
