Bennett was born on December 16, 1990, in Stockport, England. He started his footballing career at the youth academy of Bolton Wanderers but was released without making a first-team appearance. He then had spells at non-league clubs such as Mossley and Clitheroe before catching the eye of Football League clubs with his performances for Alfreton Town in the National League North.
