Banks began his footballing journey at his local club Greenock Morton, where he spent his youth career before making his senior debut for the club in 1992. He then went on to play for a number of clubs including Heart of Midlothian, Dundee United, Gillingham, Bolton Wanderers, and Blackpool FC.
