Villeneuve began his racing career in the early 1990s, competing in various junior categories before making his Formula 1 debut in 1996 with the Williams team. In his debut season, he made an immediate impact by securing pole position in his first race and went on to win four Grand Prix races in his rookie year. This impressive performance earned him the title of World Champion in 1997.
