Ward started his youth career at the Watford Academy before joining the Tottenham Hotspur Academy in 2011. He signed his first professional contract with Spurs in 2013 and made his senior debut later that year in a Europa League match against Anzhi Makhachkala. Ward spent several years on loan at various clubs, including Chicago Fire in the MLS, Rotherham United, Ipswich Town, and Coventry City.
