Pete Hegseth

Pete Hegseth

Background

Peter Brian Hegseth was born on 6 June 1980 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He studied at Princeton, where he edited the conservative Princeton Tory, and later took a master’s degree at Harvard’s Kennedy School. He served as an infantry officer in the Army National Guard with deployments to Guantanamo Bay, Iraq and Afghanistan, and holds two Bronze Stars, according to Wikipedia.

From Advocacy to Broadcasting

Hegseth worked briefly at Bear Stearns before his military service redirected him. He led the advocacy organisations Vets for Freedom and later Concerned Veterans for America, and ran unsuccessfully for the Senate in Minnesota in 2012. Those roles made him a familiar conservative voice on military affairs but paid comparatively little; it was television that built his finances.

He joined Fox News as a contributor and became a co-host of Fox & Friends Weekend. His disclosure records 4.6 million dollars in Fox News employment income, with that employment ending in November 2024 (his OGE Form 278e public financial disclosure, indexed by ProPublica’s structured index of that filing).

Secretary of Defense

Hegseth was nominated as Secretary of Defense and confirmed in January 2025 by the narrowest possible margin, with the vice president casting the deciding vote after several senators of his own party opposed him. He is among the youngest people to hold the office and one of very few without prior senior government or general-officer experience. The post pays 253,100 dollars a year at Executive Schedule Level I – roughly a twentieth of his final television earnings.

Books and Speaking

Publishing and the speaking circuit are his second and third income streams, and both are itemised in the disclosure. The War on Warriors carried a 348,000 dollar advance from HarperCollins and Battle for the American Mind a 150,000 dollar advance, each with royalties reported in a band between 100,000 dollars and 1 million. Two earlier titles produced little. Separately he reported honorariums above 5,000 dollars from more than forty speaking engagements – including 150,000 dollars from the American Legislative Exchange Council and 25,000 from the Heritage Foundation – totalling roughly 634,500 dollars through late 2024 (ProPublica’s structured index of that filing).

Assets and Liabilities

This is where the public record diverges sharply from the published estimates. His disclosed investment holdings are modest: a Vanguard Target Retirement 2045 fund in a 250,000 to 500,000 dollar band, a JPMorgan equity income ETF at 100,000 to 250,000, and Bitcoin holdings of 15,001 to 50,000.

Against those sit two mortgages. The larger, on his primary residence with Farm Credit Mid-America, is disclosed in a band of 1,000,001 to 5,000,000 dollars at 5.8 per cent interest; a second, on an investment property with Chase, runs to 100,001 to 250,000 dollars at 3.875 per cent (his OGE Form 278e public financial disclosure). Federal disclosure does not require the value of a personal residence to be reported, only the debt against it, which is why the liability side of his balance sheet is better documented than the asset side.

Public Recognition and Scrutiny

His recognition derives from a decade of daily American television rather than from politics, which was central to both the argument for his appointment and the argument against it. That decade also produced an unusually large archive of recorded statements, which became material during confirmation.

His confirmation was among the most contested in recent memory. Allegations concerning his personal conduct, including a 2017 sexual assault allegation he denied and for which no charges were brought, and reporting on his financial management of veterans’ organisations, were examined at length; he rejected the characterisations. In office he has faced sustained scrutiny over the handling of sensitive operational information on commercial messaging platforms, and over senior personnel changes at the department.

How the Estimate Is Calculated

Documented. From his OGE Form 278e public financial disclosure, filed in December 2024 and certified in January 2025: 4.6 million dollars in Fox News income; book advances of 348,000 and 150,000 dollars; roughly 634,500 dollars in speaking honorariums across more than forty engagements; investment holdings reported in bands totalling approximately 365,000 to 800,000 dollars; and a federal salary of 253,100 dollars a year from January 2025.

Estimated. Royalties on the two main titles are disclosed only as bands of 100,000 to 1 million dollars each, so the true figure sits somewhere between 200,000 and 2 million. The market value of his primary residence and investment property is not disclosed at all.

Liabilities. Mortgage debt of between 1.1 and 5.25 million dollars across two properties. This is the most consequential number in the filing, and the published estimates of his wealth that I could find do not appear to account for it.

Not verifiable. Property values, the precise position within every disclosed band, savings held outside reportable vehicles, and the tax paid on roughly 5.7 million dollars of gross earnings across 2022 to 2024 – at federal and New York rates that plausibly removed close to half.

Why this range. The lower bound assumes the mortgages sit near the top of their bands and property equity is thin, leaving little more than the disclosed investment accounts. The upper bound assumes debt near the bottom of the bands, substantial equity in both properties and royalties at the higher end. Published figures of around 6 million dollars appear to total his gross earnings without deducting tax or the disclosed debt, and are not supportable from the filing itself.

Estimated Net Worth

$1 Million – $5 Million
